Only male bullfrogs make the loud bellow this frog is known for. It can be heard up to a half a mile away.
They are the are most wide ranging North American amphibian. They can be found in the fresh water of the continental US, Nova Scotia, and Canada. You can also find them in Mexico and Cuba. They have also been seen in Asia, South America and Europe.
The American Bullfrog is the of the 100 most invasive species in the world.
Bullfrogs are green or gray brown in color. They have dark spots for camouflage and golden colored eyes.
Bullfrogs have circles on the side of their heads, known as the tympanum. This is used to help them hear, transmitting sound waves to their inner ear.
In male bullfrogs, the tympanum is much larger than the eye. In females, it is the same size or smaller than the eye.
Female bullfrogs are slightly larger than the males. They also tend to be browner and more spotted.
Male bullfrogs have yellow throats and female bullfrogs have white or cream colored.
Bullfrogs are nocturnal hunters. They hide and rest during the day.
Bullfrogs will eat anything they can catch and fit in their mouths. They eat bugs, rodents, fish, small birds and snakes.
