Wildlife Wednesday - Bullfrogs

The bullfrog is the largest of the North American frogs. They can grow up to 8 inches and weigh 1.5 pounds.
Bullfrogs get their name from the sound they make, which is reminiscent of the sound of a bull.

Only male bullfrogs make the loud bellow this frog is known for. It can be heard up to a half a mile away.

They are the are most wide ranging North American amphibian. They can be found in the fresh water of the continental US, Nova Scotia, and Canada. You can also find them in Mexico and Cuba. They have also been seen in Asia, South America and Europe.

The American Bullfrog is the of the 100 most invasive species in the world.

Bullfrogs are green or gray brown in color. They have dark spots for camouflage and golden colored eyes.

Bullfrogs have circles on the side of their heads, known as the tympanum. This is used to help them hear, transmitting sound waves to their inner ear.

In male bullfrogs, the tympanum is much larger than the eye. In females, it is the same size or smaller than the eye.

Female bullfrogs are slightly larger than the males. They also tend to be browner and more spotted.

Male bullfrogs have yellow throats and female bullfrogs have white or cream colored.

Bullfrogs are nocturnal hunters. They hide and rest during the day.

Bullfrogs will eat anything they can catch and fit in their mouths. They eat bugs, rodents, fish, small birds and snakes.

Bullfrogs quietly sit and wait for prey and then lunge with their mouths wide open to catch it.

The American bullfrog is cannibalistic.

Male bullfrogs aggressively protect their territory.

They live about 7-9 years in the wild.

Bullfrogs hibernate during the winter.
Bullfrogs have very powerful hind legs with fully webbed feet.

They can jump about 3 feet and jump a distance of 6 feet.

Bullfrogs live near permanent sources of fresh water, favoring warmer climates to cooler ones. They prefer still bodies of water.

Bullfrogs like to be close to the banks of water sources, rather than open water.

A female bullfrog can lay 20,000 eggs at a time which take about a week to hatch.

Bullfrogs start off life as tadpoles. The tadpoles gradually develop limbs. Depending on where the frog lives and the water temperature this can be a relatively quick process of 3 months, but can take up to 3 years.

The skin of the American bullfrogs creates a toxin which makes it taste bad to many predators, but is not harmful to humans.

A group of frogs is called an army.
